The Risk Assessment Information System (RAIS) was established in 1996 by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge Operations Office (ORO) to serve as a unified clearinghouse for risk assessment information used to evaluate human health and ecological risk from the Manhattan Project's legacy waste. Designed to foster transparency and accessibility, the RAIS provides a forum for the general public, risk assessment professionals, and State and Federal regulators to access our risk assessment information. The RAIS integrates a variety of resources, including guidance documents, tutorials, databases, historical information, and risk calculation models.
Currently, DOE's cleanup contractor, UCOR (United Cleanup Oak Ridge LLC),continues to support the RAIS by maintaining its information and updating databases and tools in accordance with new guidance. The RAIS server is housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and maintained by its staff.
Today, the content of the RAIS not only supports environmental restoration activities for the ORO but is also utilized by users across the globe. Registered RAIS users include representatives from a majority of state governments, numerous federal agencies, and universities, with users located in over 60 countries. The RAIS team is committed to continuing to provide this information freely to assist all users with their risk assessment needs.
