Background Comparison Sources

Generic Background Concentrations of Inorganics in Soil
This table presents appropriate ranges and means for inorganic concentrations based on soil type. They are generic values that may be applied to any area of the U.S. These data may be compared with local background data to establish a baseline for the local background concentrations or they may be used to provide appropriate background concentrations when site-specific values are lacking.

Background Concentrations of Naturally Occuring Inorganic Chemicals and Selected Radionuclides at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant
These tables were obtained from Methods for Conducting Risk Assessments and Risk Evaluations at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Volume 1. Human Health and Volume 2. Ecological., DOE/OR/07-1506&D2. 2000. The background values presented in these tables were developed considering agreements reached between the United States Department of Energy and the regulatory agencies during comment resolution meetings, in the Federal Facility Agreement, and at technical meetings. The human health document appendices contain a series of Action and No Action Risk-based screening values for the various receptors and the provisional background values for groundwater and soil. Finally, the Commonwealth has released a state-wide background table. Because surface water and sediment are transient media in which concentrations and activities can change rapidly, PGDP does not plan to develop surface water and sediment background. Only draft background values for groundwater drawn from the Regional Gravel Aquifer (RGA) and McNairy Formation are currently available. This description will be updated to indicate when these values have been approved.

Background Soil Characterization Project for the Oak Ridge Reservation
The Background Soil Characterization Project was developed for the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) to provide background concentrations for naturally occurring constituents of potential concern to human health and to evaluate the potential risk to human health associated with these background constituents. This information is available in the following documents:

Final Report on the Background Soil Characterization Project at the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Volume 1 - Results of Field Sampling Program, October 1993, DOE/OR/01-1175/V1

Final Report on the Background Soil Characterization Project at the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Volume 2 - Data, October 1993, DOE/OR/01-1175/V2

Final Report on the Background Soil Characterization Project at the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Volume 3 - Project Plan, October 1993, DOE/OR/01-1175/V3

Soil Background Supplemental Data Set for the East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, September 2003, DOE/OR/01-2105&D1

Background values for use at Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Piketon Ohio

This table is reproduced from the Background Investigation Report and more recent Quadrant CAS/CMS Reports.
